Neurotransmitter depletion tyrosine depletes serotonin: Tyrosine is converted to L-dopa in the body and brain. Just
like L-dopa giving tyrosine that is not
properly balanced with serotonin nutrients will lead to a
situation where tyrosine depletes
serotonin. When the tyrosine depletes serotonin
enough any benefits seen with administration of tyrosine
quit. Circumstances where tyrosine depletes serotonin
significantly is not
instantaneous and may take many months.
When tyrosine depletes serotonin the tyrosine
quits working. If the patient is taking drugs that
work with serotonin, dopamine, or norepinephrine
as the tyrosine depletes serotonin the drugs quit working. The balance
between serotonin and dopamine is intertwined to the
point that they work as one neurotransmitter system
and for either to function optimally both must be
addressed properly.

From the Abstract:
Overall, the findings suggest that MDMA depletes 5-HT by
increasing tyrosine and its eventual conversion to DA within
5-HT terminals.
