 Depression for patients

Written by: Marty L. Hinz, MD

POSTED by J1237 Jan 31, 2009 06:59PM: I have suffered with severe depression and anxiety for about 10 years.  I was very, extremely skeptical about the NeuroResearch formulas after having been on a myriad of antidepressant SSRI's.  I thought it was just a money making scheme and I was scared. Let me just say that I'm glad I did my research and I'm glad I tried it because it has made a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE.

  Depression for patients

For patients the issue is, "When do I get help?"

At the top of the list is when thoughts of hurting yourself of thoughts of suicide are present. This is a serious situation and needs professional medical immediately.

When depression is severe enough as to interfere with day to day activities professional medical help is needed. Depression that interferes with going to work or carrying out day to day activities such as caring for yourself and doing the things needed such a basic hygiene.

While sleep disturbance such as sleeping too much or not sleeping enough is usually present with depression there are other causes of sleep problems. If you are not getting adequate sleep you will not function optimally during the day. Your doctor can help you sort out why your sleep is not optimal.

All Symptoms Are Not Depression

Just because a patient meets the diagnostic criteria of depression does not mean the patient is suffering from depression. Anemia and thyroid disease can present in the doctor's office with classic symptoms of depression, but the treatment of these diseases is far different than the standard treatment of depression.

Self Treatment

Exercise has been suggested as an effective self treatment of depression. While the effectiveness of exercise has not been verified in formal medical studies exercise should not be discouraged.

Use of the serotonin nutrient 5-HTP has been held out in the public and on the internet as an effective self treatment of depression. The fact is that all formal double blind placebo controlled studies of 5-HTP have shown that it is no more effective than a sugar pill. The most favorable studies end by saying, "results were inconclusive and more studies are needed." 5-HTP shares the same problems associated with prescription drugs in that using only 5-HTP will deplete neurotransmitters (primarily dopamine). It would appear that based on formal medical studies use of only 5-HTP is not as good as using prescription drugs to treat depression, no studies have shown that 5-HTP is more effective than a sugar pill (drugs in general get 7% better relief than a sugar pill), and both deplete neurotransmitters when not used proper. Despite its popularity using only 5-HTP has yet to prove its effectiveness in formal studies.

Its no secret, NeuroResearch Clinics uses the nutrients 5-HTP, tyrosine, levodopa, and cysteine to treat medical patients in order to get these results. Proper use of these simple ingredients in medical treatment is not simple. From time to time a patient will say, "Why do I want to take that, I can go to a health food store and buy it?" People off the street buying in a health food store is like going to an art store and buying a bunch of oil paints then going home and expecting to paint like a mater artist even though there was no previous painting experience. These nutrients have tremendous potential due to their chemical properties. This potential is only fully realized in the hands of the trained professional using neurotransmitter testing. Treatment is not just giving a nutrient pill, it is the whole medical management approach doctors are trained in to insure that that treatment is on track in order to get symptoms under control.

The Peer Reviewed Research of NeuroResearch Clinics

The neurotransmitter treatment research findings of NeuroResearch Clinics have not been ignored. The University of Minnesota Medical School is writing a series of papers on the neurotransmitter testing research of NeuroResearch Clinics. The first of a series of papers by University of Minnesota Medical School based on the neurotransmitter testing research of NeuroResearch was published in "NeuroPsychiatric Disease and Treatment" May 1, 2009. Ingrid Kohlstadt, MD of Johns Hopkins in her new medical text book released February 7, 2009 included a chapter on depression written by Marty L. Hinz, MD  President Clinical Research NeuroResearch Clinics outlining in depth the proper use of amino acids and neurotransmitter testing in treatment of depression.
