Carbidopa
In giving
levodopa
carbidopa is
used to treat
problems of nausea
associated with the
use of levodopa.
Carbidopa
does not cross the
blood brain barrier.
Carbidopa
blocks peripheral
synthesis of both
serotonin and
dopamine, which
results in serotonin
and dopamine
depletion.
Peripheral
neurotransmitter
related problems are
by far the largest
grouping of side
effects seen in
Parkinson's Disease
treatment. I have
never seen any of
these problems when
treating with
levodopa
alone or in
combination with
5-HTP. These
problems appear to
only occur when
Carbidopa
is added to
treatment.
The peripheral
blocking of
serotonin and
dopamine synthesis
by Carbidopa
appears to also have
significant effects
on the hematologic
system and the liver
(as reflect in the
occurrence of lab
abnormalities).
Proper management of
these problems
involves eliminating
Carbilevodopa,
which removes the
problem of serotonin
and dopamine
depletion. A list of
problems seen during
Parkinson's Disease
treatment with
carbidopa
includes:
