ANTIDEPRESSANTS QUIT WORKING

Antidepressants quit working: For in depth discussion of how antidepressants deplete neurotransmitters go to the "neurotransmitter depletion" link to the left.

The first selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor Prozac became available in 1989. Since 1998 NeuroResearch Clinics has been teaching doctors in AMA category 1 continuing medical education conferences that antidepressants used without administration of properly balanced nutrients deplete neurotransmitters.

Drugs that work with neurotransmitters do not work if there is not enough neurotransmitters in the brain to work with. There are only two reasons why antidepressant drugs quit working.

  • The patient does not take the drug properly.

  • The drug burns out (depletes) the neurotransmitter levels to the point that it will no longer work.

Assuming the patient has been taking pills properly, the only reason antidepressants quit working is when they burn out (deplete) neurotransmitter levels of the brain so low that the drugs can no longer work.

So how do we know this? The evidence is simple and straight forward. In patients that experience the antidepressants no longer working simply starting properly balanced nutrients restores the effects of the drug in 1 or 2 days in most cases. The neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine do not cross the blood brain barrier. The only way to increase levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain is to give properly balance nutrients which the brain then synthesizes into new neurotransmitters.

WHAT DOCTORS DO WHEN ANTIDEPRESSANTS QUIT WORKING

When the patient presents in clinic complaining that antidepressants are no longer working the standard approach in medicine is to do one of three things:

  • Increase the dosing on the drug

  • Add a second drug

  • Switch to a new drug

All three of these approaches do nothing to increase the neurotransmitter levels. To the contrary each of the three actions simply sets up conditions that burn out (deplete) neurotransmitter even further. When drugs burn out neurotransmitter levels to the point that they no longer work the proper approach should be to add properly balance nutrients leading to an increase in neurotransmitter levels of the brain.

THE NEURORESEARCH CLINICS APPROACH TO DEPRESSION TREATMENT

It is no secret NeuroResearch Clinics uses the nutrients 5-HTP, tyrosine, levodopa, and cysteine in conjunction with neurotransmitter testing as indicated to treat medical patients in order to get the results documented by our doctors, Proper use these simple ingredients in medical treatment is not simple. From time to time a patient will say, "Why do I want to take that, I can go to a health food store and buy it?" People off the street buying in a health food store is like going to an art store and buying a bunch of oil paints then going home and expecting to paint like a mater artist even though there was no previous painting experience. Having been in medicine since 1972 I can firmly state that use of 5-HTP, tyrosine, levodopa, and cysteine, in medical clinics, with urinary neurotransmitter testing is some of the most sophisticated medical treatment in medicine. These nutrients have tremendous potential due to their chemical properties. The potential is only fully realized in the hands of the trained professional. Treatment is not just giving a nutrient pill, it is the whole medical approach doctors are trained in to manage the disease properly and make sure that that the whole treatment plan is on track to get symptoms under control.
